Librotraficante!

Have you heard of Librotraficante? It is an organizing effort in response to Arizona banning Latino and ethnic studies in its public elementary, secondary and post-secondary institutions. Librotraficantes will be smuggling banned books back into Arizona over spring break (March 12 to 18).  Yes, knowledge is power, and therefore dangerous.  Lordy, I want to go and join the caravan.  bell hooks, recently commented on Arizona's repressive actions (she also commented on The Help but we will save that for another day). hooks emphasized, "Our hope lies not in what white supremacy does but in what people will do for truth." 

So gather up those dusty copies of Pedagogy of the Oppressed (Paolo Freire), The House on Mango Street (Sandra Cisneros), Occupied America: A History of Chicanos (Rudolf Acuna) and 500 Years of Chicano History in Pictures (Elizabeth Martinez) and ship them to the underground classrooms, "wet-book" libraries and Libro-Traficante caravans headed to Arizona.  You may scoff at Black History Month, think it trite or redundant but it hasn't been banned ... yet.
